Abstract
After briefly reviewing the controversies surrounding Toulmin's ‘argument fields’, it will be argued that such notion was not advanced by the author as a technical or truly operational notion for the analysis of argumentation but, rather, as a critical notion that allowed him to highlight the need to attend to field-dependent evaluative criteria within any rational justification practice. Finally, some remarks will be made about why it is relevant to favour such an interpretation.
