Abstract
This paper conducts archival research to shed light on speech and debate education in mission schools in modern Japan. After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, many Protestant missionaries arrived in Japan. They opened Western-style schools based on the liberal arts tradition and provided students with opportunities to practice speech and debate both inside and outside of class. This paper presents the result of a preliminary investigation into argument practice in mission schools in modern Japan.
