A managerial perspective on value-based healthcare: understanding the roles of management, teamwork, and leadership in the development of hospitals towards delivering value-based healthcare
Abstract
Healthcare systems around the world are facing challenges related to unpredictable quality of care, insufficient coordination between healthcare domains, and increasing healthcare expenditure. One of the strategies that has been broadly embraced as an answer to these challenges was introduced in 2006, and is termed Value-Based Healthcare (VBHC). Despite the intuitive appeal of VBHC, we are currently not equipped with enough knowledge on the process through which VBHC can best be implemented in hospitals. Furthermore, as hospitals are shifting their traditional siloed structures towards condition-focused structures, in the form of IPUs, it is important to learn how professionals manage to work according to VBHC principles in these IPUs. To advance this knowledge, the aim of this dissertation was to understand how VBHC is
implemented in hospital organizations and how the restructuring of care in IPUs impacts the daily work practice of healthcare professionals.
