Combattere il “gran rivale”: prospettive meridionali sul Turco nei poemetti narrativi lepantini

Abstract

The article examines the portrayal of Turks in five poems written after Lepanto in the Viceroyalties of Naples and Sicily Lepanto: Gasparro Caffarino’s Naval conflitto (1571), Scipione Carignano’s Felice vittoria, Scipione Lembo’s Trionfi della Santissima Lega (1572), Tomaso Costo’s Rotta di Lepanto (1573) and Vittoria della Lega (1582). The quantitative analysis of epithets and nouns reveals subtle variations based on emphasized traits like impiety, avidity, ‘error’, rivalry, and superbia. The second part explores the figurative treatment of Ali in key sections of Trionfi and Vittoria. Both poems accentuate the metaphysical error of the Turk, mediated through Dante’s Commedia.
