Discrepancies in diagnoses and treatment of type B ankle fractures

Abstract

There is no consensus in diagnoses nor treatment of type B ankle fractures. This thesis investigates multiple type of radiologic diagnostics, in order to safely exclude instable type B ankle fractures. Stable type B ankle fractures, with a MCS < 6 mm on the mortise view, can safely be managed conservatively with performance of the weightbearing radiograph within a week. When using of the gravity stress radiograph, the cut-off value of MCS ≥ SCS + 3mm should be applied, while for the weightbearing radiograph the MCS ≥ SCS + 2 mm is advised. The results of ultrasound are promising and should be further investigated.
