Chondrosarcoma models : understanding chemoresistance mechanisms for use in targeted treatment

Abstract

Primary bone tumors are rare, constituting 0.2% of all reported neoplasms. Malignant cartilage tumors of bone are classified as chondrosarcomas. Recurrent and metastatic disease as well as chondrosarcomas located at unresectable sites present a major problem, as conventional chemo- and radiotherapy have shown to be ineffective. Here the development of new model systems for chondrosarcoma are shown alongside the evaluation of new therapeutic targets. This completion of the bench to bedside pipeline as will hopefully aid in the rapid clinical implementation of effective targeted therapy for chondrosarcoma.
