Doctoral Thesis

This study focuses on seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Dutch Protestant theologians, in particular the followers of Gisbertus Voetius (1589-1676) and Johannes Coccejus (1603-1669), and their views on the Jews. A comparative study of Voetian and Cocceian views on Israel not only covers an essential aspect of the history of Jewish-Christian relations in the Dutch Republic, but also contributes to the understanding of the relationship between Voetianism and Cocceianism in general. This dissertation is the second part of a broader study of views on Jews among Dutch Protestants that is shortly to be published under the collective title Gans Isra_l [All Israel]. In the first part of this trilogy, the focus will be on the political, social, and cultural background, and on theological-historical developments since the Reformation. Attention will also be paid to views on Israel inside and outside the Reformed Church. In the third part, nineteenth-century Christian perspectives on Jews in the Netherlands will be discussed.
